48-009 US Navy MiG-Killing F-4J Phantoms

This decal depicts aircraft from three US Navy F-4J Phantom squadrons (VF-31, 92 and 103) as they were flown over North Viet Nam during the Linebacker operations of 1972. Three of the aircraft provided are in the markings of actual MiG killer Phantoms. Since none of these were the personal aircraft of the aircrews flying them, additional markings depicting two of the victorious aircrews’ personal aircraft which displayed the kill markings are also offered. This practice of double marking has resulted in several standard references misidentifying the actual MiG-killing aircraft. The information presented here is based on extensive research and direct correspondence with some of the aircrew involved. This sheet updates Fox One Decal #48-001, the changes being based on information received in the six years since it was first issued.

One major difference on this revised set is that I deleted Silverkite 207 in favor of including 212.  Silverkite 212 was shot down on May 10, 1972.  It was the second Alpha Strike of three that day and occured during the same huge air battle in which Cunningham became an ace.  Silverkite 212 was caught in a flak trap and its entire vertical tail was blown to bits.  The crew ejected, but CMDR Harry Blackburn, the squadron's Executive Officer was captured and tortured to his death.  His RIO Steve Rudloff was blinded by an exlposion in the cockpit and was captured almost immediately after hitting the ground.  He came home when the POWs were released.
